The Kadavu was sighted by the first British naval captain William Bligh in 1792. The place is volcanic in origin and is bisected by a central mountain ridge with fertile slopes. It rises to a peak at Mount Washington or Ndelainambukelevu. Timber and other cultivated crops like bananas and copra are found in the central and eastern areas. Visit the main town and capital Vunisea on the western coast. Kadavu’s population is almost entirely Melanesian.
