The Lomaiviti archipelago is a group of islands between Viti Levu and the Lau Islands. The archipelago covers a total area of 411 square kilometers with a population of 16, 461 in 2007. The largest town is Levuka which was Fiji’s first modern town that served as its capital from 1871 to 1877.
Ovalau is the principal island and location of local government of the Lomaiviti Islands. You can see historical town sights in Ovalau such as the Cession Stone that commemorates the signing of the Deed of Cession between Fiji and Great Britain, the Anniversary Bure built for Prince Charles when he came to grant Fiji her independence in 1970, the Queen Victoria Memorial Hall, The War Memorial (Niukaube Hill), and the Levuka Museum. Other islands are the Namena, Makogai, Wakaya, Koro, Nairai, Batiki, Gau, and Moturiki. The Namena is a private island with a resort in northern Lomaiviti. Makogai is a government owned island serving as the turtle breeding station. Wakaya is a private island that homes the Wakaya Club. Koro is a very fertile and green garden island of the Lomaiviti. Nairai is a native island with a resort underway. Batiki is a stunning picturesque island. Gau is the largest among the Lomaiviti islands and Moturiki consists of Fijian villages that are extremely friendly to the foreigners.
Ovalau Watersports are famous with the Koro Sea in Fiji offering the most exciting and most diverse waters. Educating scuba diving trips in small individual groups to the Lomaiviti reefs are offered with PADI diving instruction.
